Working With ADHD Pitfalls
Working With ADHD Pitfalls
I'm so glad you're here! The Almanac is the guide I wish I'd had when I was setting up my clinic: all the technical details, nitty-gritty how-tos, form templates, and more.
When I started my clinic, I had just moved to a new city where I didn't know anyone. I still remember how alone and isolated I felt, Googling things as I went along and making my best guess. I am lucky I had useful life experiences and past jobs that helped me figure a lot of things out, but I still made a lot of mistakes! My hope with the Almanac is to help you avoid the pitfalls I experienced, to have your questions answered before you need to know, and to make you feel a bit less alone in the process.
Who This Is For
I wrote this for the practitioner building a practice on their own terms. Maybe you're fresh out of school and staring down your board exams with no clear picture of what comes after. Maybe you're leaving a group practice to go solo, or reshaping a practice you already have. Maybe you want something smaller and more sustainable than the high-volume model everyone treats as the only option. Wherever you're starting from, this is for the person who wants to build a practice that actually fits them.
That belief runs underneath all of it: so much of what feels like "failing at business" is a practice that was designed wrong from the start, or designed for someone else. You don't have to grind yourself down to run a real clinic. Your practice can look different than someone else's. You just need good information and a setup that suits your life.
What to Expect
Think of this less like a course to finish and more like a reference to keep on the shelf, the way an almanac has always been something you pull down when the season calls for it. You don't have to read it front to back. Come for what you need when you need it, whether that's choosing a space, pricing your work, writing your policies, or handling a situation you didn't see coming.
Each entry is practical and specific, pulled from my own clinic and the things I learned the hard way. Where a template or example helps, I include one. Sometimes, I am not telling you exactly what to do, but provide suggestions on how to think through the situation so you can decide for yourself.
You can see the full list of lessons, so I won't list everything here. New entries get added over time, so keep checking back!
And that's the other thing: the Almanac is a living document. The old almanacs came out once a year, but this one I'll keep updating as I go. If you have a specific question I haven't covered, or a topic you'd like to see, don't hesitate to send me a message. Some of the best entries will come from what you're actually stuck on!
One honest note before you dig in: I'm sharing what worked for me, not legal or financial advice. Laws, licensing rules, and requirements vary by state and change over time, so treat the Almanac as a knowledgeable friend who has been through it, and check anything binding against your own state and your own professionals.
I'm really glad you're building this. We worked hard for our degrees and licenses, and we are in a difficult spot in our industry. My hope is this Almanac helps smooth some of the journey for you! Let's get into it.
